Elements of the eTutor System

1. eTutor Instructor's Guide

The eTutor Instructor's Guide is a web-based, interactive instructors guide that has been generated from the eTutor Course Development system. It provides a graphical representation of each component of the course together with the instructor's script for that component.

The eTutor Instructor's Guide is based on a design created during the three-year, collaborative project with GM, EDS, Ford, Kodak, Texas Instruments, and others. It has been continually enhanced since 1996. When the instructor wants to issue a slide, web page, video, or other object that can be displayed in a web browser, they will click a button associated with that component and the associated page is automatically loaded on all participating student screens.

2. eTutor Student Materials

Participating students will listen to the instructor in the classroom and view the course material on individual PCs or on a TV at the front of the room. Students answer questions through the eTutor browser window which are stored in the CADE database with the results of any other exams they have taken. Optionally, they can take a test through the CADE Learning Management Web after the class has ended.

3. Other eTutor Components

eTutor Server

The eTutor Server runs on the same computer that hosts the web from which the eTutor Instructor's Guide was loaded. Its function is to communicate with the eTutor ActiveX Control, accept the URL of the page the instructor wants displayed, and communicate that URL to each of the student's PCs.

eTutor ActiveX Control

The eTutor ActiveX Control is a component that is automatically downloaded in the student' browser. It communicates with the eTutor Server and displays the appropriate page on the student's monitor, control the display parameters, and present questions asked by the instructor.
