What exactly do you mean by interactivity?
Interactivity can come in many forms and a good course uses as many as possible.
Why is interactivity important?
You have active involvement, learners are engaged (learning). The instructor can call on anyone so no learner can hide, no one is "safe" and they pay attention. It doesn't require self-motivated learner, there are no "dead ends". If the learner needs help, they can ask instructor for direction. They also can't disengage without someone knowing. Seeing the “real” results of a class, allows the instructor to "pace" content properly. Most importantly, learning occurs beyond the instructor & material by sharing the experience of others.
How often should interactivity happen?
There is no real rule, but every 5-7 minutes or so. The real issue is to make sure it fits the content and is not artificial.
Is it effective? As much as classroom?… web?
Past studies have show interactive video training to be 25% more effective than the same course in a classroom environment.
Isn’t TV easy to ignore?
Yes… However, with the interactive nature of CADE and good instructional design, participants are much more attentive than in either classroom or the web.
Don’t people get bored just watching a person on a TV?
Certainly NOT if its done right! You can use many different types of media to generate a lot of interest:
Can certification courses be done with CADE?
Yes, CADE is being used to offer Continuing Education Units, degree completion, GED courses, and college degrees.
How long is a typical CADE program?
Typically CADE courses run from one to three hours. By comparison however, a CADE course can be delivered in half the time as you would deliver the same course in a classroom.
Isn’t everyone using the web for training these days?
The web has certainly captured a lot of attention, but companies who are using web based training are quickly discovering its limitations. The web is good for some of your employees when the topic is short, usually less than a half hour’s content. To reach all your employees with topics of complexity or longer duration there is no better medium than CADE.
What are some of the problems with web based training?
It requires specific computer knowledge to use and most people don’t have adequate access to PCs. It is very difficult to hold a learners attention and interesting web courses are very expensive to develop and many require a lot of bandwidth from the corporate network. The desk is additionally a very inappropriate training environment.
How does CADE overcome these problems?
CADE eliminates the requirement for special knowledge or computer skills. It has a very low cost to produce an interesting program and takes very little time to go from concept to delivery. The learner’s interest is peaked with the wide variety of media available, the interactivity holds their attention, and the delivery environment encourages learning. It also has an infinitesimal impact on bandwidth.
What do you mean by “Knowledge Transfer?”
In any CADE course its likely that there are participants with more knowledge and experience than either the instructor or material in some areas. CADE helps to extract that knowledge and share it among hundreds of other participants. Something that can’t be done in a classroom or the web.
This sounds great, why haven’t I heard of CADE before?
CADE is a very new product and was introduced in the summer of 2002. We are just now marketing CADE to key organizations.
How do we learn how to “do it right”?
We provide a 2 day workshop that teaches your trainers the lessons we’ve learned over the past 8 years with companies like GM, Ford, Kodak, K-Mart, EDS, TI, Goodyear, Good Samaritan, CARS, Wal-Mart, and many others.
How do you see the instructor?
In the classroom, participants see and hear the instructor on a television. Single students may see the instructor on the computer screen.
How does each participant interact with the instructor if they are in a classroom?
Each participant has a wireless remote control and microphone, similar to a TV remote control. They use the remote to answer True/False, Yes/No, Multiple Choice type questions and to speak with the instructor.
How do I talk to the Instructor?
You can press the "Call" button on your remote, which is like raising your hand in class. If the instructor has time to speak with you, the instructor will call on you and you can speak through the microphone that's built in to your wireless remote. You can also use a PC mic if you are interacting using the PC's keyboard and mouse.
How many people can participate in a CADE program?
There is virtually no limit to the number of people that can participate in an CADE program. Courses frequently range from 10 up to 200 or 300 people, special programs have 600 or more, and we have had as many as 2,700 people in a single broadcast.
How do you manage a course of that many people? Not everyone can call in.
While not everyone can talk, everyone can participate by answering questions and hearing people they know speak with the instructor.
But what if I have a question?
You might not be able to talk, but chances are another caller has the same question and you get yours answered through them. Once heard, you can take your “hand down”.
Can everyone hear the people who call in to talk with the instructor?
Yes, the audio is sent from the remote site over an IP network and rebroadcast so everyone can hear the conversation.
Does the instructor know how everyone answered the questions?
Yes, they are displayed on the instructor’s console so he/she knows who answered what question as well as knowing who didn’t answer.
Can the instructor show everyone the answers?
Yes, a graph can be displayed that shows the answers coming in by number of responses or a percentage. The individual answers can not be shown.
What if the instructor just wants a quick response to a simple question?
The instructor can ask an anonymous question and will see a percentage of the participants that answer.
What if someone doesn’t understand what the instructor is saying?
Any participant can “raise their hand” and the instructor can call on that participant and speak with them.
Are there any other ways to talk with the instructor?
Yes, a participant can type a message through the Chat feature or record an audio question that will be answered later.
But what if I don’t hear the answer?
Then you can record your question and send it to the instructor. It will be answered later and you can hear the answer when you log on to your personal web page in the LMW.
What happens to everyone’s responses to the instructor’s questions?
All information is captured, time-stamped, and stored in a database where it can be retrieved by the appropriate personnel with a standard web browser.
Is my information in this database?
Yes; all student, site, course, lesson, test, question, result information is stored in the database.
How do I maintain all this information?
Easily, over the web. All information in the CADE system can be created, maintained, and deleted by authorized personnel with a standard web browser.
Do I have to have a training room?
Yes, the office environment, especially the desktop, is a poor place to train or communicate with your employees. A training room offers an environment conducive to communication. However, it doesn't need to be a dedicated, special purpose room. Any quiet location with the right layout will work very well.
What do I have to know about computers to use CADE?
Participants don’t have to know anything! Only one person at each site needs to know how to start the application and show people how to log on. The rest of the interaction can be done with a TV remote control like device.
Is the information safe?
All information captured in the CADE system is stored in a central database. Only authorized personnel have access to that database. Sensitive data, like identification numbers, are encrypted before being transmitted over the network.
What do I need at each site?
Only a multi-media personal computer (speakers and microphone), a connection to the Internet, a television, and a satellite receiver. The CADE software will run on PCs with Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP.
Does CADE require a satellite broadcast?
No, it will work with satellite, streaming video, or teleconferencing systems. Satellite is simply a better way to reach large numbers of people.
What is the impact on my internal bandwidth requirements?
The impact is minimal. The only traffic moving through the system is a very small block of data, only about ten bytes of data per answer.
Doesn’t streaming audio take a lot of bandwidth?
Not really. Only one person at a time is actually streaming audio so its impact is very small. The actual amount of bandwidth required is only 3.6kb. Even on a 56kb dial-up connection, there is plenty of room.
What happens if the delivery technology changes?
No problem. No matter how you choose to deliver the program audio and video, satellite, teleconferencing, intranet, or Internet your investment is safe. Switch the technology as you will and your courses and delivery remain the same.
Costs and Pricing
What does CADE cost?
Pricing is based on the number of remote sites you have and the Presentation Studio System that is specified. However, the cost is a fraction of what you are spending now to train your employees.
How will it let me save money?
In many ways: reducing or eliminating travel and per diem costs, reducing course development costs, reducing the number of trainers, reducing the time off work, reducing the time to develop a course, and many other ways.
How much does it cost to develop a course for CADE?
Production costs can be very low. It won’t take any longer to develop a CADE course than what you would in a classroom course.
