Flying Wire TensionAbsent a very expensive flying wire tension meter (CABLE meters don't work!), a good test is to adjust the tension uniformly so that a hand-held scale placed at mid-wire will deflect the wire about one inch at 50#s force. Check some of the old "Starduster Magazine" issues; I'm sure this has been discussed. If you have a pal with a Christian Eagle, check his assembly manual on rigging. Also, make sure your javelins are firmly attached to all flying and landing wires so the wires don't set up a harmonic at such times as they do normally vibrate a little. Bob Dwyer N28LJ Front Flying WiresThe front flying wire is an anti drag and flying wire. Because of the angle, forward, it is acting more as a drag wire than a anti-lift wire. If you attempted to make that wire as tight as the others you would hear some undesirable noises coming from inside the wing, like glue joints breaking!!!! You will notice the front wires vibrate more during a slip, but not with positive " G " forces. Will also be looser during inverted loads. Bill Clouse (former Starduster President)
